The United States kept their hopes of progression at the T20 World Cup alive with a thumping 93-run victory over the Netherlands.

USA would have been eliminated if they were beaten in Chennai but, after being put in to bat, they posted a huge 196-6 and defended that total comfortably.

Saiteja Mukkamalla was the key man for USA, with the 21-year-old scoring a superb 51-ball 79 which contained four sixes.

He was supported by captain Monank Patel (36 from 22 balls), before Shubham Ranjane smashed an unbeaten 48 off 24 to impressively take the innings to its conclusion.

The Netherlands were therefore forced to come out swinging and consistently lost wickets, with the match effectively over as a contest by the halfway stage of their reply, when skipper Scott Edwards (20) was bowled by the superb Harmeet Singh (4-21), who removed four of the top seven.

That wicket left the Netherlands at 75-6, and Shadley van Schalkwyk (3-21) then helped to clean up the tail, with the Dutch all out for just 103 after 15.5 overs.

USA's win concluded an entertaining day of action that also saw Zimbabwe stun Australia and the United Arab Emirates win a thrilling clash against Canada.

Canada were restricted to a low total of 150-7, with Junaid Siddique (5-35) starring with the ball, only for a sluggish start to the run chase appearing to have left UAE doomed, as they still required 83 from the last seven overs with four wickets already lost.

But UAE caught fire just in time, with Sohaib Khan (50 from 21) turning the game on its head with four maximums and Aryansh Sharma (74no) batting through the entire innings as a dramatic chase was completed with only two balls to spare.

Data Debrief: Bowling attacks impress for USA & UAE

Harmeet was the standout bowler for USA on Friday, but Van Schalkwyk has been their – and the whole tournament's – leading man so far. From three matches he now has 11 wickets – four more than any other player in the 2026 edition – at a stunning 6.45 average and an economy rate of just 6.55.

USA's much-needed win saw them end a six-match losing streak at the T20 World Cup and it was also their first T20I victory in four attempts against the Netherlands.

The figures produced by Siddique, meanwhile, represented a career best for him in T20I cricket and they were also the best-ever recorded by a UAE player at the T20 World Cup.

It was just the second five-wicket haul of the tournament so far, with West Indies' Romario Shepherd (5-20) getting the other against Scotland.
