Gill and Axar propel India to first win of England tour
India put the disappointment of losing their T20I series to England behind them by winning the first ODI at Edgbaston by six wickets.
Brendon McCullum was relieved from his position as England's Test coach earlier this week, and as his focus switched fully to the white-ball teams, they struggled.
Despite a strong start from Ben Duckett (43), England failed to find any real rhythm as they were dropped to 107-6 before the halfway mark of their innings.
However, Joe Root was typically strong with an unbeaten stand of 76 and got help from Liam Dawson (68) as they put together an 111-run stand for the seventh wicket to steady the ship.
Axar Patel (4-62) eventually dismissed Dawson and then skittled out the rest of England's lower order, with only 30 more runs added to the hosts' tally, as they scraped to 258.
This India side was much different to the one beaten 4-0 in the T20I series, with the inclusion of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill.
However, Rohit (11) and Kohli (5) were dismissed early before Gill impressed with 80 before retiring hurt with India at 149-2.
The tourists then quickly found themselves down 160-4, but Washington Sundar (52 not out) and Axar (57 not out) both hit half-centuries to get India over the line to 262-4 thanks to a six from the former.
A truly flawless all-round performance

England's ODI woes go on
This was England's 13th defeat in 19 ODIs since the start of 2025, and it could have been a lot worse if not for Root and Dawson.
Dawson's 68 was his highest tally in any format for England, but once Axar got into his groove, Root was left stranded and unable to keep their hopes alive.
India took advantage of England's recent struggles, with the hosts bowled out for the eighth time out of 12 since the start of last year, as they were all skittled out in the 48th over.
Gill has said he expects to be fit for the second ODI in Cardiff, and India were able to follow his example, closing out the match by reaching their target of 259 with 28 balls still to spare.
