Padikkal and Gill propel India to 300 on day one
India closed out day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka in a commanding position at 300-5, despite losing Rishabh Pant to injury.
Pant (3) was forced to retire hurt after he sustained a blow to the wrist.
India's wicketkeeper is expected to be able to bat again in the first innings, and was even padded up in the latter stages of Sunday's final session in Colombo, but he watched on as Dhruv Jurel (7) and Saransh Jain (4) reached stumps.
Devdutt Padikkal was India's star performer, as he struck 117 to anchor their innings.
KL Rahul (18) fell in the 11th over, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (45) then coming just short of a half-century before he was dismissed by Asitha Fernando (3-46).
Padikkal and Shubman Gill (50) then came to the fore, putting on a partnership of 120 before the latter was sent packing by Fernando.
Lahiru Kumara (1-38) then hurt Pant and also left Ravindra Jadeja with a sore forearm, while Padikkal's stand came to an end when he was bowled by Keshara Nuwantha (1-93).
Jadeja battled his way to 43 before he was bowled by Fernando, but Sri Lanka could not make any more inroads before the close of play.
Stumps: It is Stumps on Day 1 in Colombo and India are 300/5 from 85 overs.

Padikkal goes back-to-back
India have won each of their last two bilateral men's Test series in Sri Lanka, having won only one such series in the history of the format prior to this run.
Their win in the first Test came in part down to Padikkal's efforts, as he plundered 167 and 44 in his two innings.
The 26-year-old, who struck 12 boundaries, has kept up that form, and in just his fourth Test, he has already scored two centuries.
He was ably supported by India captain Gill, who put in a skipper's knock, as he chipped off 50 in 108 deliveries.
India head into day two in a hugely promising position, and with Pant still able to return, they should be targeting a big score.
