England lost nine wickets on day one of the second Test against Pakistan, despite a delayed start due to rain.

There were just 56 overs bowled on Thursday, with play also ending early due to bad lighting, leaving England on 248-9 at stumps.

Mohammad Abbas (4-56) was in top form for the tourists, who won the toss and chose to bowl, as the seamer dismissed openers Ben Duckett (17) and Emilio Gay (8) within the first seven overs.

Abbas also removed England captain Joe Root (4) soon after, and the hosts were four down heading into lunch as Mohammad Ali (3-67) bowled Harry Brook (15).

Jordan Cox (55) was in good touch before being caught in the slips by substitute Salman Agha, who pulled off a sensational diving catch, while Jamie Smith (61) became the next England batter to have his stumps rattled by Ali.

Jofra Archer's (14) big hitting was brought to an abrupt end by Abbas, leaving Gus Atkinson (34 not out) and Josh Tongue (1 not out) at the crease ahead of Friday's resumption.

Pakistan capitalise on winning the toss

With rain pouring down overnight at Lord's, the toss would prove more crucial than ever, and Pakistan took full advantage of winning it.

Their fast-bowling duo of Abbas and Ali caused plenty of problems for England, with the former reaching 900 first-class wickets with his dismissal of Duckett.

This was also Abbas' third four-wicket haul at Lord's, and he could find his name on the honours board if he picks up the final wicket on day two.

England, however, do not find themselves in a completely hopeless position, largely thanks to contributions from Cox and Smith.

Cox became just the second England batter since 1980 to score 50 or more in their first two Test innings at number three, after Ravi Bopara.
