Aaron Rodgers admits the New York Jets could opt to release him at the conclusion of the team's dreadful 2024 season.

Hopes were high that the Jets would be in Super Bowl contention when they lured Rodgers away from the Green Bay Packers last year, but he missed the entire 2023 season after tearing his Achilles in Week 1.

This season, the Jets are third in the AFC East with a 4-11 record and are guaranteed to miss the postseason for a 14th campaign in a row.

As a result, Rodgers' future with the team remains uncertain, with the Jets still looking for a new head coach and general manager after firing Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas.

Last week, a report in The Athletic suggested owner Woody Johnson is keen to move on from Rodgers after taking advice from his teenage sons.

Asked about that report during his weekly appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers said: "Being released would be a first; being released by a teenager, that would also be a first!

"So, hey, I'm open to everything and I find the comedy in all of it. If that happens, hey, it's a great story.

"I think there's a world where they just say, 'Hey, thank you, we're going to go in another direction' on January 6. That's a possibility.

"I think there's also a possibility we're going to wait and see who the new staff is."

The 41-year-old took a $34million pay cut last year, but the Jets will lose $49m against the cap in dead money if they choose to release him.

Rodgers has repeatedly hit out at the culture within the organization since his arrival in New York, and he believes dressing room leaks remain a major issue.

"What's best for the Jets is not having these types of leaks all the time, and when that gets figured out, then it'll be a little easier to win," he said.

"It doesn't have a direct impact on the players on the field, but it has an impact on the culture and the chemistry and the overall energy of the building, and that's what needs to get better."

The Jets visit Super Bowl contenders, the Buffalo Bills, for a divisional matchup on Sunday before rounding off their season against the Miami Dolphins one week later.
