The New York Jets have confirmed the Aaron Rodgers era is coming to an end.

In a statement released by the team on Thursday, the Jets announced they have informed the four-time NFL MVP he will not be part of their plans for the 2025 season.

Fox Sports previously reported prior to Sunday's Super Bowl 59 that the Jets were intending to part ways with the 41-year-old Rodgers and end the future Hall of Fame quarterback's mostly disappointing two-year tenure with the team.

"Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback. It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures," Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey announced in a joint statement.

"We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organisation and wish him success moving forward."

Rodgers is expected to be officially released when the new league year begins on March 12. He is entering the final season of a three-year, $112.5 million contract he signed after being acquired by the Jets from the Green Bay Packers in April 2023, and is due to count $23.5 million towards this year's salary cap.

The Jets could designate Rodgers as a post-June 1 cut, which would reduce his dead cap total to $14 million for this season but would result in a $35 million charge in 2026. He would still be free to sign with any team once the new league year begins.

Rodgers had expressed interest in returning to the Jets for a 21st NFL season when asked about his future plans towards the tail end of the 2024 campaign, though he added he was undecided on whether he would play another year.

His tenure in New York will end up lasting only 18 starts with just six wins, well below the expectations that were raised for the Jets after they acquired Rodgers from Green Bay two years after the star quarterback claimed his fourth league MVP award in 2021.

Rodgers' debut season with the Jets ended swiftly as he tore his left Achilles tendon in the opener, and New York went just 5-12 during a tumultuous 2024 campaign in which it fired both head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas in mid-season.

The 10-time Pro Bowler did start all 17 games this past season and became only the fifth player in NFL history to reach 500 career touchdown passes. Rodgers finished with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating - his lowest in any season as a full-time starter.

"I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets," team owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. "His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career.

"From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome and I wish him only the best in what he chooses to do next."

The Jets, whose 14-year streak of missing the playoffs is the longest active drought in the NFL, will now be looking to add a new quarterback in addition to its changes at head coach and GM.

Glenn, a former Jets cornerback, was hired in January following a successful run as the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator. Mougey also joined the organisation last month after serving the previous three seasons as the Denver Broncos' GM.
