NFL: Lions win tune-up for Week 18 showdown
Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes as the Detroit Lions got ready for next week's massive regular-season finale by rallying for a 40-34 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.
In its final game before Sunday's clash with the Minnesota Vikings, a contest that will give the winner the top seed for the NFC playoffs, Detroit scored 19 straight points in the second half to move ahead for good after the 49ers took a 28-21 lead on Brock Purdy's 5-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel in the third quarter.
The Lions matched the Vikings for the NFC's best record at 14-2 heading into the NFC North rivals' showdown in Detroit. The winner also receives a bye for the playoffs' opening round, while the loser will drop to the conference's No. 5 seed and will play on the road on Wild Card Weekend.
Goff finished with 303 yards and connected with Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown for touchdowns. Williams also had a rushing touchdown, while Jahmyr Gibbs capped a 117-yard rushing night with a 30-yard touchdown with under three minutes to play.
San Francisco (6-10) lost for the third straight game and sixth time in seven outings despite Purdy passing for three touchdowns and running for another. The 49ers' quarterback compiled a season-high 377 passing yards but was intercepted twice by Kerby Joseph during Detroit's 19-0 second-half run.
Joseph's first pick came shortly after Jake Bates pulled the Lions within 28-24 with a 57-yard field goal late in the third quarter. The turnover set up Goff's go-ahead 4-yard touchdown strike to St. Brown with 19 seconds left in the period.
Bates finished the Lions' next drive with a 42-yard field goal to extend the lead to 34-28 before Joseph intercepted Purdy again with 7:34 left to play.
Detroit again turned the turnover into points, as Gibbs broke free down the right sideline and raced untouched into the end zone to make the score 40-28 after the extra point was missed.

San Francisco had built a 21-13 half-time lead on Purdy's touchdown passes to Ricky Pearsall and Kyle Juszczyk and the quarterback's 9-yard touchdown run with 6:13 left in the second quarter.
The Lions pulled even by marching 66 yards in 10 plays on the opening drive of the second half, which Goff finished with a 6-yard touchdown pass to LaPorta. Detroit then converted a 2-point attempt on Goff's toss to Tim Patrick to even the score at 21-21.
Pearsall recorded career highs of eight catches and 141 receiving yards, while George Kitlle also had eight receptions that totalled 112 yards for the 49ers.
