NFL front offices began looking toward the future, one day after the conclusion of the 2024 regular season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars fired coach Doug Pederson but retained general manager Trent Baalke on Monday, while the New York Giants decided to keep coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen after going 3-14.

Pederson's firing was widely expected after Jacksonville went 4-13 this season, and the team has been in a downward spiral for the last 13 months.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan said before this season that this was the franchise’s best team, but Pederson failed to get the most out of the squad, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence was unable to take the next step in his development.

Lawrence battled through injuries this season, but the team went just 2-10 in games he started.

The Jaguars have lost 18 of their last 23 games overall after starting the 2023 season 8-3, before stumbling down the stretch to miss the play-offs.

In his first season in Jacksonville in 2022, Pederson led the Jaguars to a 9-8 record, an AFC South title and a 31-30 comeback win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild-card round.

“I strongly believe it is possible next season to restore the winning environment we had here not long ago,” Khan said in a statement. “I will collaborate with General Manager Trent Baalke and others, within and close to our organization, to hire a leader who shares my ambition and is ready to seize the extraordinary opportunity we will offer in Jacksonville.”

The 56-year-old Pederson, who led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl title in the 2017 season, went 23-30 in three seasons with the Jaguars, with one trip to the play-offs.

The 49-year-old Daboll will be returning for a fourth season with the Giants even though the team matched a franchise record with 14 losses.

Owner and team president John Mara announced that Daboll and Schoen would lead New York in 2025 after a discussion with co-owner Steve Tisch.

“Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization,” Mara said in a statement. “As disappointing as the results have been, Steve and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.

“We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”

The Giants hired Daboll and Schoen in 2022, and the team went 9-7-1 to make the play-offs with a wild-card win over the Minnesota Vikings in their first season together. Daboll was recognised for his success by being named the AP NFL Coach of the Year.

New York was unable to build on that success, however, and stumbled to a 6-11 record in 2023 with quarterback Daniel Jones struggling with uneven play and injuries.

After the 2022 play-off run, Jones was rewarded in March 2023 with a four-year, $160million contract extension, but he was benched midway through this season after New York started 2-8, and was ultimately released after he asked the team to let him go.

Following Jones’ benching, the Giants turned to Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock at quarterback, but neither of them are the answer at signal-caller.

New York has the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft, and Schoen and Daboll will be evaluating quarterback prospects in hopes of turning the franchise around.
