Shai Hope and Justin Greaves kept West Indies just about in the fight in the first Test against New Zealand.

New Zealand went into Friday in a commanding position after centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham propelled them into a 481-run lead by the close of play on day three.

The Black Caps added 49 runs to their overnight total before declaring on 466-8, leading by 530.

John Campbell (15) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (six) were dismissed in swift succession by Jacob Duffy (2-65), with Alick Athanaze (five) and Roston Chase (four) following as the Windies were reduced to 72-4, with a big win looking on for New Zealand.

Yet Hope, who had to leave the field with an eye infection on Thursday, held his own along with Greaves, putting on an unbeaten stand of 140 to guide West Indies to stumps on 212-4.

Hope will resume play on day five on 116 not out, with Greaves on 55 at the other end.

West Indies still trail by 319 runs, so the onus will be on Hope and Greaves to dig in again if the tourists are to rescue a positive result at Hagley Oval.

Data Debrief: Shai gives Windies hope on milestone appearance

This is Hope's 250th match for West Indies, across all formats. He is the 16th player to reach that landmark.

The 32-year-old has marked it in excellent fashion, hitting 56 in the first innings and now plundering a century in the second.

He also scored a ton (103) in his last Test, against India in October, which was his first century in the format since August 2017 against England. After an eight-year wait for one hundred, two have now come along in quick succession.
