England's first T20I against India abandoned due to rain
England's first T20I against India was hit by heavy rain, with the opener in their five-match series washed out on Wednesday.
England, looking to move on from their Test series defeat to New Zealand, which ended on Monday, did not have the chance to bat, with rain halting their clash with India midway through at the Riverside Ground.
India were 6-2 at the end of the second over, with Sanju Samson (1) and Ishan Kishan (0) both being dismissed early on.
But, led by half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma (59) and Shreyas Iyer (68), India reached 189-7 at the end of their innings, which was played through light rainfall.
Heavier rain during the interval then saw the covers brought out, and with the weather not improving, the match was called off.
The second match will take place at Old Trafford on Saturday, though England have a fitness concern over Phil Salt, who spent time off the field with a jarred shoulder.
