England head coach Brendon McCullum is "hopeful" Jofra Archer will feature in their second Test against New Zealand later this month.

England won the first Test at Lord's by 115 runs, with seamers Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson both recording five-wicket hauls in the comfortable win for McCullum's side.

Archer was not selected having chosen to stay with Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals for the play-offs, with England feeling he was not ready for a red-ball return.

The 31-year-old has taken 60 wickets in 18 Tests at an average of 30.1 and a strike rate of 60.3, though did not play in the longest format at international level between 2021 and 2025 due to injury problems.

The second Test gets underway on June 17 at The Oval, and McCullum is confident Archer will make the right steps to be ready.

"We will probably drill down on that over the next couple of days," said McCullum.

"We are hopeful he will be available for the second Test. Then we will work out conditions-wise where we are at. He is following a plan and we completely trust Jof.

"He has shown in the past that he gets himself ready based on the plans we get together and come up with. He has always turned up in the condition we want from him."

McCullum was also full of praise for debutant Emilio Gay, who made the most of his opportunity when replacing Zak Crawley at the top of the batting order.

On a Lord's wicket which suited the bowlers, Gay scored 57 from 95 balls in the second innings to help England on their way to victory.

"I was super impressed. I felt like a week ago things were spinning a bit for Emilio – the initial step into the England set-up," added the England boss.

"I am sure he has many more Test runs ahead of him. He will have grown immensely from the week's work. He has moulded brilliantly into the group."
