Eagles plan to rest Barkley in season finale

The NFL single-season rushing record appears to be safe.

Saquon Barkley is likely to sit out the Philadelphia Eagles' season finale against the New York Giants on Sunday, which would deny the star running back an opportunity to break the 40-year-old record.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni implied that Barkley would not play against the Giants, saying, "he'll probably be somebody that rests."

With last Sunday's 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia clinched the NFC East and the conference's No. 2 seed, leaving the season finale essentially meaningless.

To prevent any chance of injury before a play-off run, Barkley appears likely to sit, leaving him 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards.

"At the end of the day, I had to make the decision on what I felt was best," Sirianni said.

Barkley ran for 167 yards against the Cowboys to give him 2,005 yards, becoming the ninth running back in NFL history to top 2,000 yards in a season.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts is also unlikely to play against New York after sitting out last Sunday with a concussion.
