Bangladesh got off to a strong start in the first Test against Sri Lanka thanks to centuries from Najmil Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim.

The tourists ended the first day on 292-3 in Galle after surviving an early collapse.

Sri Lanka debutant Tharindu Rathnayake removed Shadman Islam (14) and Mominul Haque (29) inside the first 17 overs, while Asitha Fernando took the wicket of Anamul Haque (0).

Despite falling to 45-3, captain Shanto and former skipper Mushfiqur swung the game in Bangladesh’s favour with superb knocks, scoring 136 and 105 not out respectively.

Their unbeaten partnership of 247 frustrated Sri Lanka, who lost two reviews throughout the day.

Rathnayake ended with figures of 2-124 from 32 overs, but Bangladesh are firmly in the driving seat heading into day two.

Data debrief: Mushfiqur dominates Sri Lanka’s spin

Mushfiqur came into this series under a bit of pressure due to a lack of runs, but he seems to be at his best against Sri Lanka.

This marks his fourth century against Sri Lanka, scoring more runs against them than any other country.

Overall, Bangladesh's star duo put on the second-highest fourth-wicket partnership in a Test in Galle, and they will be looking to push on further on Wednesday.
