Bangladesh defeated Australia by 86 runs (DLS method) to produce a stunning start to their three-match ODI series.

The Tigers were put into bat after losing the toss, but managed to successfully defend their total of 284-8 in Mirpur.

Although Saif Hassan (5) fell early to Nathan Ellis (3-38), Tanzid Hasan (54) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (67) put together a 96-run partnership to get the hosts back on track.

Matt Renshaw (2-35) and debutant Liam Scott (2-57) caused trouble for the Bangladesh middle order, but Mosaddek Hossain's unbeaten 86 off 70 deliveries swung the match back in his side's favour.

There was a rain delay before Australia's batting innings, but Taskin Ahmed (1-28) fired up the crowd as he sent Matthew Short's stumps flying with the very first ball.

Marnus Labuschagne (1) followed in the second over, before Nahid Rana (4-41) picked up the important wickets of Josh Inglis (19) and Alex Carey (47).

Australia were 191-9 after 42.2 overs before rain halted play again, this time permanently, with Cameron Green's unbeaten knock of 52 in vain for the tourists.

Australia's white-ball squad in turmoil

Although Australia were without three key players in Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, this defeat to Bangladesh was not entirely a surprise.

Australia lost their ODI series against Pakistan 2-1 last time out, which came off the back of a group stage exit at the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Australia also entered the tournament after being swept 3-0 by Pakistan in a T20I series, with serious questions now being asked about their side.

Nevertheless, Bangladesh were in top form in Mirpur to achieve just their second ODI win over Australia, and their first since 2005.

Rana was unable to record his fourth five-wicket haul over the last three months due to the weather conditions, but it was another exciting performance from the 23-year-old, while Mosaddek scored a career-high unbeaten 86 on his return after four years away.
