Novak Djokovic will not compete at this year's ATP Finals after losing to Rinky Hijikata in the second round of the Paris Masters.

The record seven-time winner of the ATP-1000 event lost 2-6 6-3 6-3 in two hours and 16 minutes, bringing an end to his season.

Djokovic started on the front foot, converting a break point in the opening game, and he did so again in game seven before serving out the set.

Hijikata conceded 11 break points in the first set, but gave away none in the second, instead taking Djokovic's serve in game eight to force a decider.

Djokovic squandered three break points early in the third, and Hijikata made the most of that reprieve with back-to-back breaks, the second of which clinched victory.

Hijikata will face Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round after the Argentinian stunned Alex De Minaur 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 in the French capital.

Taylor Fritz managed to avoid an upset, coming back from a set down to defeat Alex Molcan 6-7 (6-8) 7-5 7-6 (7-5).

Harsh reality for Djokovic?

Djokovic has already slipped out of the top 10 in the world rankings, and now he will miss the ATP Finals while fit for the first time since 2017.

It is only the second time in the last 20 seasons Djokovic will miss the final tournament of the season, with the 39-year-old facing the harsh reality of his current fitness levels compared to the rest of the Tour.

While he has won 23 grand slam titles, his most recent major triumph came in 2023 at the US Open, though he did reach the Australian Open showpiece earlier this year.

Djokovic needed to reach at least the semi-finals in Paris to reach the ATP Finals, and was given a boost after Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and De Minaur all lost earlier on Wednesday.

However, it was to be Hijikata's day; he is the first qualifier to defeat a former champion at the Paris Masters since Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in 2020.
