Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Vienna Open with a straight-sets victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Second seed Alcaraz won 6-1 7-6 (13-11) in one hour and 41 minutes, saving four set points in the second set before claiming the win.

The opening set was almost as simple as could be for Alcaraz, who reeled off five consecutive games, including two breaks, to take the lead with ease.

Alcaraz also started the second strongly, by converting a break point, but Basilashvili answered back in game six before saving two break points to force a tie-break.

The Georgian made a strong start to the tie-break and brought up four set points, but Alcaraz held his nerve before eventually getting over the line with his fourth match point.

Earlier on Thursday, Daniil Medvedev came back from a set down to defeat Cameron Norrie 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-1).

Alcaraz avoids Austria upset

Despite a large gap between their ATP rankings, with Basilashvili 95th ahead of the tournament, Alcaraz had to overcome a confident opponent.

Basilashvili had won 14 of his previous 17 matches and reached the Almaty final last week. He lost the showpiece match in three sets to Medvedev.

But Alcaraz secured another straight-sets victory, doing so with nine aces and 26 winners.

Alcaraz has now won 23 consecutive matches at ATP 500 level and has reached his 60th tour-level quarter-final.

He will face Tommy Paul in the last eight, their first meeting since Alcaraz defeated the American at the US Open back in September.

Medvedev, meanwhile, faces Adrian Mannarino in the next round after becoming the second men's player born since 1990 to reach 100 Tour-level quarter-finals, after Alexander Zverev.
