Novak Djokovic came back from a set down to defeat Ugo Humbert in the first round at the Swiss Indoors Basel.

The fourth seed won 4-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 29 minutes to set up a last-16 tie with Jan-Lennard Struff in Switzerland.

Humbert made an early breakthrough in the first set, taking Djokovic's serve in game three, but the Frenchman saved a break point in the very next game before winning the set.

However, after saving two break points in the opening game of the second, Djokovic raced into a 4-1 lead to pile the pressure on his opponent.

Humbert called for a medical timeout as he suffered from a back problem, and he could not stop Djokovic from there onwards as the Serbian needed just one break in the third before clinching victory with his first match point.

Casper Ruud, meanwhile, suffered a shock second-round exit in Basel after losing 1-6 6-3 6-4 to Nuno Borges.

Elsewhere in the Vienna Open, Daniil Medvedev reached the second round with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win over Daniel Merida Aguilar.

Djokovic avoids another upset

Following his first-round exit at the Shanghai Masters, Djokovic looked set for another shock loss after Humbert took the first set in Basel.

However, competing in the event for the first time since 2011, Djokovic managed to regain his rhythm for his 20th Tour-level win of the year.

The 39-year-old has now achieved at least 20 wins on the ATP Tour in each of the last 21 seasons, while he is still within a chance of reaching a record 19th ATP Finals.

Djokovic made 73% of his first serves and saved five of the six break points he faced, while this marked his 33rd consecutive victory over a French opponent.

Medvedev, meanwhile, claimed a Tour-leading 39th win on hard courts this year, with Cameron Norrie next up for him in Vienna.
