Diana Shnaider held off Leylah Fernandez to win the Pan Pacific Open title on Sunday, while Harriet Dart claimed her first WTA Tour crown at the Guangzhou Open.

Third seed Shnaider looked to be in total control when she went 6-4 4-0 up in the Tokyo showpiece, only for 2022 US Open runner-up Fernandez to take seven of the next eight games to tee up a decider.

The Canadian also had three opportunities to break in Shnaider's first service game in the third, but after battling to a hard-earned hold, the Russian went on a three-game winning run.

Having clinched a 6-4 5-7 6-2 victory in just under two hours and 20 minutes, Shnaider praised Fernandez's efforts during the post-match ceremony.

"I would like to congratulate Leylah on an amazing week; last week, some great achievements through this Asia Swing," Shnaider said.

"I also want to say thanks to and congratulate my coach, who is here with me, for achieving our first title this season.

"It definitely means a lot, it's definitely a great achievement and a great finish to the season."

Elsewhere, Dart had to fight back from a set down to defeat Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger 4-6 6-3 6-4 and claim her first Tour-level title.

Having twice been pegged back after building a third-set lead, Dart squandered two championship points before finally making it third time lucky with a big winner on serve.

An ecstatic Dart said afterwards: "I'll try not to get too emotional! A big thank you to my team this week.

"It's amazing to play in front of such a big crowd. It's been so much fun here, and I really appreciate it and hope to be back next year."

Super Shnaider and Dart climb the rankings

Shnaider's victory over Fernandez – who was in tremendous form after claiming the Singapore title and finishing as runner-up in Ningbo – is projected to lift her back to 11th in the WTA Rankings.

That is the joint-highest position of her career, having also sat on the cusp of the top 10 in May 2025, while Sunday's win brought her sixth Tour-level title and her first since last year's Monterrey Open.

Dart, meanwhile, had to come through qualifying to even reach the main draw of the WTA 250 event in Guangzhou.

And her reward will be a place in the world's top 100, sending her straight into the main draw for the Australian Open when the 2027 season kicks off two months from now.
