Rafael Jodar marked his ATP top-10 debut with a straight-sets victory over Alejandro Tabilo in the Paris Masters.

Moving up to 10th in the rankings for the first time on Monday, 20-year-old Jodar won 6-2 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes in the French capital.

Tabilo converted the first break point of the match to take a 2-1 lead, but Jodar reeled off five consecutive games, featuring three breaks of serve, to win the first set, though the youngster required five set points in game eight to do so.

The pair exchanged breaks early in the second before Jodar converted another break point at the fourth time of asking in game eight, allowing him to serve for the match.

Jodar needed just one match point to get the job done, setting up a second-round clash with Casper Ruud.

Ruud dispatched qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3 6-2 in 61 minutes, while Lorenzo Musetti will face world number one Alexander Zverev in the next round after defeating Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (12-10).

Jodar's rapid rise rolls on ahead of ATP Finals

Jodar is on course to feature at the ATP Finals this year, and another strong run in an ATP-1000 event would do his chances no harm.

The Spaniard recorded 10 aces without committing a double fault against Tabilo, while firing 34 winners.

He has now defeated Tabilo four times in 2026, after the latter won their first meeting in March, with Jodar winning eight of the last nine sets between the pair.

Since the format's introduction in 1990, only Stefan Edberg (32) and Boris Becker (24) have claimed more wins within their first eight ATP Masters 1000 main draws than Jodar (21).

Ruud, meanwhile, has claimed 17 wins in ATP-1000 events in 2026; it is his most wins in a single season in such events – surpassing his previous best of 16 in 2021.

Ruud and Jodar met in the Shanghai Masters last month, with the latter winning in three sets en route to the final, in which he lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
