Brook will work to 'regain trust' of England team ahead of Sri Lanka series
Harry Brook admits he must regain the trust of England's players following his altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand, ahead of their ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The conduct of England's players was criticised throughout their 4-1 Ashes defeat to Australia, with Brook in the headlines over an incident that took place shortly before that series, the night before an ODI defeat to the Black Caps in Wellington.
Brook – who was only appointed as captain of England's white-ball teams last April, following Jos Buttler's decision to step down – was fined and warned after being seen to confront a bouncer outside a club.
England's players and staff will now be subject to a midnight curfew throughout their ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka, which serve as their preparations for the T20 World Cup next month.
The first of three 50-over matches takes place on Thursday in Colombo, and England have made several changes to their lineup.
Zak Crawley returns at the top of the batting order in place of Jamie Smith, while Liam Dawson will accompany Adil Rashid in the spin attack.
At Wednesday's pre-match press conference, Brook expressed remorse for his actions in New Zealand and said he would work to get his team-mates onside.
"Obviously, I made a terrible mistake, not only as a player, but as a captain," Brook said. "It was very unprofessional and I should be leading from the front.
"I've learnt from my mistakes, I've reflected a lot on what's happened and I know it wasn't the right thing to do.
"I want to say sorry to my team-mates, to all the fans that travel far and wide to watch us, that spend a lot of money on coming out to watch us and supporting us, and to the ECB for putting them in a tricky situation, and it'll never happen again. I'm extremely sorry."
Asked if he felt his job was at risk after the incident, Brook said: "Probably, yeah. I think I've got a little bit of work to do to try and regain the trust of the players.
"I said sorry to them yesterday. I felt like I needed to say sorry for my actions. It's not acceptable as a player, but as a captain it's really not acceptable to do what I did in New Zealand. I'll be the first person to say that. I hold my hands up."
