Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips struck centuries for New Zealand to propel them to a first-ever ODI series win in India, despite Virat Kohli's impressive ton.

New Zealand had levelled the series last time out, thanks to another impressive performance from Mitchell, and they clinched their 2-1 victory with a 41-run win on Sunday.

The tourists made a shaky start, with Henry Nicholls (0), Devon Conway (five) and Will Young (30) falling early on, mostly thanks to Harshit Rana (3-84).

But a partnership between Mitchell (137), fresh off his century in the second match, and Phillips (106), steadied them. They combined for 219 runs before KL Rahul caught the latter off Arshdeep Singh's (3-63) bowling.

Mitchell followed shortly after, with Michael Bracewell's unbeaten 28 helping to propel New Zealand to 337-8 in the closing stages.

India struggled to find their rhythm with the bat, though. Kohli entered the fray in the fourth over and kept the hosts steadily ticking with his knock of 124 off 108 balls.

However, other than Nitish Kumar Reddy (53) and Harshit (52), New Zealand limited India's batters to low scores, with Kris Clarke (3-54) and Zakary Foulkes (3-77) playing a big role to get the hosts out for 296 with four overs to spare.

Data Debrief: New Zealand turn a new page

One year on from winning their first Test series in India, the Black Caps have followed that up in another format after coming from 1-0 down.

Mitchell was at the heart of this success, scoring his fourth century in India, as he helped to deal the hosts a first defeat in 14 home ODIs where they had won the toss.

For Kohli, it was a 54th hundred in the format, while Reddy and Harshit scored their maiden ODI 50s, but that was not enough to overcome a strong New Zealand bowling display.
