Alex De Minaur kept his hopes of qualifying for the last four of the ATP Finals alive after a straight-sets win over Taylor Fritz on Thursday.

De Minaur, who suffered a heartbreaking three-set defeat to Lorenzo Musetti earlier this week, earned a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 victory over Fritz in one hour and 35 minutes.

Only a straight-sets victory was enough for the Australian, and he put on an impressive attacking display, getting an early break in the first set, only to be pegged back shortly after at 3-3.

Fritz was then forced to defend a break point before the tie-break, in which De Minaur reeled off two runs of three consecutive points to get over the line and into the lead.

Another early break put De Minaur in control against a nervy Fritz, who failed to challenge the world number seven.

Though De Minaur missed his first match point attempt on the American's serve, he took his second to improve his record in Turin to 1-2.

He now needs a favour from the now-qualified Carlos Alcaraz, who can take De Minaur into the semi-finals with him if he beats Lorenzo Musetti later on. However, the Italian would qualify if he beats the world number one.

Data Debrief: De Minaur earns timely top-10 win

De Minaur claimed just his second top-10 win of 2025 (beat Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup), and in doing so, earned his first-ever victory at the ATP Finals.

And now, he is hoping to become the third player to reach the semi-final at the ATP Finals despite having a losing record, but that will all depend on Alcaraz.

As for Fritz, he fell short of making a third appearance in the last four as he finished the year with a 53-23 record.
