Daniil Medvedev lost his cool after squandering three match points in a defeat to Brandon Nakashima at the Cincinnati Open.

Medvedev looked all set to progress on Tuesday when he bounced back from 5-2 down in the first set to take the lead.

He then held the match in his hands at 5-4 up on Nakashima's serve in the second set.

Yet Medvedev could not capitalise, with Nakashima saving three match points, before winning the tie-break and then surging to a 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 victory.

Medvedev's frustration was evident as, after missing the match points, he threw his racquet at the electronic boards at the side of the court.

While Medvedev crashed out, there were no such issues for Felix Auger-Aliassime, who beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo 7-5 6-1.

Frances Tiafoe toppled American compatriot Learner Tien 6-4 4-6 6-4 in a thriller, while Taylor Fritz beat Thiago Agustin Tirante 7-5 6-3.

Nakashima keeps his composure as Medvedev loses it

Medvedev wears his emotions on his sleeve, and as well as hurling his racquet, Medvedev also lashed out at several microphones as he threw a tantrum.

He committed 51 unforced errors, but on the flip side, Nakashima showed great poise to drag himself back from the brink.

"Down match points, I was just trying to tell myself to keep fighting for every point," Nakashima said. "I'm super happy with the level in the third [set]."

Auger-Aliassime, meanwhile, has now reached at least the fourth round in Cincinnati five times over the past six years. He will face Tiafoe next.
