Iga Swiatek reached the last 16 at the Cincinnati Open the hard way after recovering from a set down to defeat Maria Sakkari.

Swiatek won 4-6 6-1 6-1 in two hours to book her place in the round of 16, where she will face either Diane Parry or Lois Boisson.

Sakkari put Swiatek under early pressure with a break in the fifth game of the opening set, which the Greek won despite squandering two more break points in the seventh game.

However, going a set behind seemed to wake Swiatek up as an early break in the second saw her go 3-0 up, and another in the sixth game helped her fly through the set and force a decider.

Swiatek still had to save two break points in the second set, but had to do no such thing in the third as she converted all three of her break point opportunities and claimed victory with her first match point.

Swiatek reaches another WTA-1000 milestone

Swiatek has rediscovered some of her best form in recent weeks, having also won the Canadian Open last Thursday, while this victory helped tick off another milestone for the Pole.

Swiatek has claimed her 100th win from 127 WTA-1000 matches on hard court – since 2009, only Serena Williams (118) has claimed 100 wins from fewer matches on the surface.

She is also just the fifth active player to reach the milestone, along with Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina and Williams.

Swiatek is now the only player to feature in the round of 16 in each of the last five editions of the Cincinnati Open, though Sabalenka could join her in that category on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old has taken another step in the right direction with the US Open fast approaching.
