Iga Swiatek stormed to victory over Elena Rybakina to clinch the Canada Open title.

It has been a difficult season for Swiatek, who has slipped down to number five in the WTA rankings, but the Pole showed her prowess with a dominant display in Toronto.

Swiatek triumphed 6-2 6-3 to win her first title of 2026, having failed to reach a final previously this season.

Indeed, Swiatek had not won a trophy since triumphing at the Korea Open in September 2025.

Swiatek built off a superb service game, with the six-time major champion winning 80% of her first-serve points compared to Rybakina's 60%.

Rybakina did not take any break points, while Swiatek got the better of her opponent's serve three times as she returned to title-winning ways in style.

"It means so, so much to me," Swiatek said. "All these past months were not easy. I'm really happy that I kept focusing on growing, changing my game a little bit, improving despite all the opinions that many people have about me every day on the internet.

"It's not easy to deal with all of that. So I'm really happy that the reality is different."

Swiatek surpasses Sabalenka

This marks Swiatek's 12th career title at WTA-1000 level, which has seen her move past the tally managed by world number one Aryan Sabalenka (11).

Since the format's introduction in 2009, the only player to have more such titles is Serena Williams (13).

Swiatek also surpassed Sabalenka for wins in WTA-1000 finals against previous champions at the level. She now has nine, while Sabalenka has eight.

In fact, among the 20 players to have featured in 5+ WTA-1000 finals, Swiatek (85.7%, 12-2) holds the best win rate.
