Jakub Mensik and Jiri Lehecka secured Czechia's place in the Final 8 of the Davis Cup, with US Open finalist Ben Shelton unable to change the United States' luck.

Shelton lost both of his singles matches across the second qualifying round, losing in straight sets to Lehecka on Friday before Mensik stunned him with a comeback 5-7 6-4 6-3 victory on Saturday.

While Shelton had lost his first game, Learner Tien and the doubles partnership of Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek had put the USA in the lead after Friday's action.

But the USA's fate was sealed as Tien also fell in straight sets in his second singles tie, with Lehecka triumphing 6-3 7-5.

While Shelton's return was disappointing, the US Open champion Alexander Zverev won his first match since winning the grand slam.

He overcame Matej Dodig of Croatia 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to initially give Germany the lead, though Dino Prizmic cancelled that out by beating Daniel Altmier 6-4 6-3.

Germany and Croatia are 1-1, with the rest of their tie taking place on Sunday.

South Korea were the first team to qualify for the Final 8, along with last year's winners Italy, with a 3-1 win over India in their qualifier.

They will compete in the final stage of the Davis Cup for the first time in their history, while Austria will also play in the Final 8 after a 3-1 win over Belgium.
