Alexander Zverev booked his place in the last 16 of the Cincinnati Open with a straight-sets victory over Terence Atmane.

However, the 2026 French Open champion did need two hours and 10 minutes to secure a 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6) win.

Atmane started on the front foot, breaking Zverev's serve on his way to a 3-0 lead in the first before the German got the set back on serve in the fifth game.

There would be no more break points in the first, which was eventually won by Zverev via a tie-break.

And the same was required in the second, where Zverev successfully defended the only break point of the set before clinching victory with his second match point in the tie-break.

Zverev will face Tommy Paul in the round of 16 after the latter came from a set down to defeat Daniel Vallejo 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Jakub Mensik reached the last 16 with a 6-3 6-4 win over Rinky Hijikata, while Flavio Cobolli defeated Alexander Blockx 7-5 4-6 7-5.

Cobolli will face Rafael Jodar in a round-of-16 showdown after the teenager overcame Alejandro Tabilo 6-2 6-1.

Alex De Minaur, meanwhile, beat Wimbledon semi-finalist Arthur Fery 7-5 7-6 (7-3), though had to save 11 break points on his way to victory.

Zverev maintains ATP-1000 consistency

After winning the French Open and finishing as runner-up at Wimbledon, Zverev is continuing to build momentum ahead of the US Open later this month.

This was Zverev's 20th win at ATP-1000 events in 2026, reaching the milestone in a calendar year for the fourth time in his career.

Only four players in the format's history have claimed more 20+ win seasons at ATP Masters 1000 events than Zverev (four – 2017, 2018, 2024, 2026) - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Jodar also continued his rapid rise to the top, becoming just the third teenager to reach the last 16 at the Cincinnati Open this decade, after Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton.

Only two players have claimed more ATP-level match wins than Jodar (36) so far in 2026 – Zverev (45) and Jannik Sinner (44).
