WNBA: Wings move to 2-0 in Commissioner’s Cup

Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points as the Dallas Wings defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 104-96 on Friday to improve to 2-0 in Commissioner’s Cup action and post their fourth consecutive victory.

Ogunbowale hit six three-pointers and added six rebounds and six assists, Jessica Shepard had a career-high 22 points to go along with 15 boards and five assists, and Paige Bueckers added 18 points while tying Ogunbowale’s franchise record of 14 assists for the Wings (7-3).

Dallas and the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx (8-2) are both 2-0 in the Western Conference standings of the Commissioner’s Cup, the league’s annual in-season competition that features a 49-game schedule from June 1-17.

The teams with the top record from each conference in the tournament will face off in the championship game on June 30.

The Sparks (4-6) fell to 0-2 in Commissioner’s Cup play with their third straight loss despite Kelsey Plum’s 27 points in her return from a three-game absence due to an ankle injury.

Mercury 78, Fire 72

Phoenix (4-8) overcame being without starters Alyssa Thomas (calf) and Kahleah Copper (hip) to move to 2-1 in the Commissioner’s Cup, while expansion Portland (6-6) dropped to 0-2.

Sky 85, Sun 80

Chicago (4-6) snapped a five-game losing streak and evened its Commissioner’s Cup record at 1-1 by beating WNBA-worst Connecticut (2-10) and sending the Sun to an 0-2 mark in the tournament.
