The Philadelphia 76ers' president of basketball operations Mike Gansey predicted LeBron James will have an immeasurable impact on the franchise, as the NBA's all-time leading scorer was officially unveiled as their latest addition.

After weeks of deliberation following his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, James confirmed last Friday that he was signing with the Sixers.

The four-time NBA champion, who is entering an unprecedented 24th season in the league, had been strongly linked with two of his former teams, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat.

James wrote on social media that he chose the Sixers in order to "have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship", also confirming they would be his last team.

Philadelphia last won the NBA championship back in 1983, though they have lofty ambitions for the coming campaign, having also acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in a blockbuster trade.

James and Brown will link up with the likes of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, with the Sixers now considered major contenders after losing in the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, the fourth time they have fallen at that hurdle in the last six years.

And Gansey believes the 41-year-old's impact will go far beyond what he produces on the court.

"There is no doubt LeBron is one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball and there are no words to measure the impact he'll have on this organisation," Gansey said. 

"I have had the pleasure of knowing LeBron since high school and have seen the high-level impact he's produced at every stop of his basketball journey. 

"He is a consummate professional, the ultimate competitor, and a tireless worker. But he is also an incredible person with natural leadership traits, a family man, and someone who possesses unwavering commitment to the community and those around him. 

"We couldn't be happier that he is officially here and are excited to welcome him, Savannah, and the James family into our 76ers family."

The Sixers did not confirm the length or terms of James' contract, per team policy, but reports suggest he has agreed a team-friendly, two-year $8m deal, including a player option.

In his 23rd NBA season in 2025-26, James was named to his 22nd All-Star Game with averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games.

His most recent NBA championship came back in 2020 with the Lakers, as he won the Finals MVP award after starring in a 4-2 success against the Heat.

James' 43,440 points put him over 500 clear of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) at the top of the NBA's all-time charts, having taken the record outright in February 2023.
