Wimbledon: Swiatek overcomes early scare to beat McNally
Iga Swiatek overcame an early scare to book her place in the third round at Wimbledon, coming from behind to beat Caty McNally on Thursday.
Despite losing the first set, Swiatek rallied and cruised through the final two sets to earn a 5-7 6-2 6-1 win in just under two and a half hours on Centre Court.
Swiatek started brightly, storming into a 3-0 lead, but McNally clawed her way back into the set, forcing 10 break points overall, and converting two before serving to love to take the lead.
The second set began in similar fashion, with Swiatek winning the first three games, though this time she was able to hold on. The Pole was confident on serve and forced a decider with another break in the final game.
Swiatek almost rounded off the match with a bagel scoreline, holding off two break points as she won the first five games of the third set.
McNally then got on the scoreboard but could not convert any of the three break points she had, with Swiatek taking the match on the second attempt.
She will face Danielle Collins in the next round, her 22nd consecutive appearance in the third round at grand slams.

Elsewhere at Wimbledon, reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova overcame Caroline Dolehide in three sets to keep her title defence alive.
She triumphed 6-4 3-6 6-2 in just under two hours, and will meet 10th seed Emma Navarro, who beat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets earlier on Thursday.
And Mirra Andreeva is also through to the next round after a confident 6-1 7-6 (7-4) win over Lucia Bronzetti.
Andreeva has now won 34 WTA-level main draw matches in 2025, already equalling her highest tally in a single calendar year (34 also in 2024).
Data Debrief: Swiatek continues strong starts
Swiatek had to work hard to earn her second win over McNally, but it ensured she improved her impressive record in the second round of grand slams.
Swiatek is the third player this century to reach the third round for 22+ consecutive women's singles grand slam appearances, after Amelie Mauresmo and Serena Williams.
In fact, she is the fourth player in the Open Era to reach that stage in the first 22+ women's singles grand slam events in a decade, after Martina Navratilova in the 1980s, Conchita Martinez and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the 1990s.
Since her debut in grand slams in 2019, only Novak Djokovic (24) has made more third rounds in singles than Swiatek (23).
