Alexander Zverev ended Rafael Jodar's dream run at the French Open and maintained his bid for a first grand slam title with a straight-sets success in the quarter-finals.

Playing under the closed roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier as heavy rain lashed down in Paris, Zverev grew into the contest after a difficult first set to triumph 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 6-3.

Jodar even served for the set at 5-3 up in the opener, but Zverev won two straight games to love en route to forcing a tie-break.

The Spanish teenager caused the second seed further issues with his movement to the net, but Zverev eventually found his groove and won four points in a row to take the tie-break away from Jodar.

And the momentum was then firmly behind Zverev, as he responded to a love hold from Jodar at the start of the second set to win five straight games and put himself on the brink.

With Jodar beginning to show signs of frustration, Zverev's overwhelming power allowed him to dictate the longer rallies, and two breaks – one in the first game and another in the last – got him over the line in the third set.

Zverev will now face either Joao Fonseca or Jakub Mensik in the semi-finals, as he eyes a fourth grand slam final and, perhaps crucially, a first since 2020 without either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner on the other side of the net.

Data Debrief: Zverev's best chance yet?

Zverev is into his fifth semi-final at Roland-Garros, becoming the first man born since 1990 to reach the last four of a particular grand slam on five separate occasions.

But when asked in his on-court interview if he was proud of that achievement, the German responded: "Not really, I don't really care. I'm happy to be in the semi-finals, but for now, that's it."

Zverev is now the clear favourite to win his first major title after falling agonisingly short at the 2020 US Open, the 2024 French Open and the 2025 Australian Open.

Having equalled Alcaraz, Zverev now has 91 victories at grand slams overall. Since the start of 2020, only Novak Djokovic (124) and Sinner (93) have more among ATP players.
