The NBA suspended the game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors on Saturday afternoon after a second civilian was shot and killed by federal officers in Minneapolis in less than three weeks.

The game was rescheduled to Sunday afternoon, with the Warriors and Timberwolves also scheduled to play Monday night.

The league announced the decision on Saturday to “prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community.”

Early Saturday morning, federal officers shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a registered nurse, while he was kneeling on the street after a confrontation. The shooting took place about two miles from Target Center, where the Timberwolves were scheduled to host the Warriors.

The shooting came after thousands braved the bitter cold to march through the streets of the Twin Cities on Friday in protest of the Trump administration’s immigration policy and the tactics of those who have been sent to enforce it.

The Minnesota National Guard was deployed on Saturday to keep the peace amid rising tensions, while Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called for the end of federal immigration enforcement in the state.

On Jan. 7, 37-year-old Renee Good was shot and killed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis as she attempted to drive away from an altercation.

The following night, the Timberwolves held a moment of silence in honour of Good, whose cause of death was ruled to be homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

On Friday, the FBI agent who led the investigation into Good’s death resigned.

Less than six years after George Floyd died at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, the city has once again become the epicentre of political debate and protest in the U.S., with federal officers targeting Minneapolis’ high Somali population.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr has been among the league’s most outspoken members against the Trump administration and will almost certainly be asked about Saturday’s shooting either Sunday or Monday.
