Timberwolves send Julius Randle to Nets in 3-team deal
The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to trade forward Julius Randle and a first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets, multiple media outlets reported on Monday.
The cost-cutting move is the first in a potentially pivotal offseason for Minnesota, creating a $33million trade exception and giving them more flexibility as the NBA’s transaction cycle begins.
Randle, a three-time All-Star, will head to Brooklyn, along with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, which begins on Tuesday.
The Timberwolves will receive the No. 33 overall selection from the Nets, which will be made Wednesday during the second round.
To facilitate the deal, Brooklyn sent center Nic Claxton and his $23.3million salary cap hit to the Chicago Bulls.
Moving on from Randle should give the Timberwolves a better chance of retaining guard Ayo Dosunmu, who was acquired from the Bulls at the trade deadline.
After having his best statistical seasons with the New York Knicks, Randle joined the Timberwolves in the blockbuster trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Big Apple.
The Nets now have a pair of veteran forwards in Randle and Michael Porter Jr., surrounded by a variety of young guards. Brooklyn also holds the rights to the No. 6 overall pick on Tuesday.
Randle averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists last season.
In acquiring Claxton, the Bulls will lose some of their salary cap space ahead of the free agency negotiating period, but they add a solid defensive center and rim-running lob threat to pair with Josh Giddey. Chicago will pick fourth on Tuesday.
Claxton averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots last season.
