T20 World Cup: Suryakumar spares India's blushes in opener against USA
India defeated the United States by 29 runs in their opening game of the 2026 T20 World Cup, though they did not have things all their way in Mumbai.
Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 84 off 49 balls was crucial as India set a target of 162, which proved to be too much of an ask for the USA.
After winning the toss, the USA were off to a flying start when Ali Khan (1-13) dismissed the destructive Abhishek Sharma for a golden duck, while Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Varma (25) and Shivan Dube (0) were all removed within the powerplay.
India's middle order also failed to find their rhythm as Shadley van Schalkwyk (4-25) starred with the ball, but a captain's knock from Suryakumar helped the holders set a defendable total.
The bowlers used that momentum swing to their advantage, as Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj combined for three wickets in the first four overs.
Despite the best efforts of Shubham Ranjane (37) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37), the USA were outclassed by India's bowling attack as they hit 132-8 from their 20 overs.

Data Debrief: Suryakumar leads the way
Following on from their 2024 triumph, India have now won nine consecutive matches at the T20 World Cup, a new tournament record.
And their skipper led the way with the bat, with his unbeaten 84 representing more than the rest of his team-mates' scores combined (74).
