The Los Angeles Lakers say LeBron James will "always be a cherished part of the family" after announcing his exit.

Reports emerged on Tuesday that James had informed the Lakers that he would not be staying for the 2026-27 season.

The 41-year-old is still expected to continue his playing career, as he plans to sign with another team when free agency opens.

James joined the Lakers in 2018-19 and, in eight seasons, led them to the 2020 NBA Championship and six playoff runs.

"LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history," Jeanie Buss, a minority owner of the Lakers, said in a social media post.

"We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers – including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.

"We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. "He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family."

James will be playing his 24th NBA season, and he has been linked with the Golden State Warriors and a team-up with Stephen Curry, while a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers has also been mentioned.

Last season, he was named in his 22nd NBA All-Star Game, with averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 60 matches.

James replied to the Lakers' post, writing on Instagram: "No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the [team colours] while trying to continue the greatness and legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint."
