Jacob Bethell lit up Old Trafford with some delightful late hitting as his unbeaten 76 helped England to a four-wicket win over India in Saturday's T20I.

Harry Brook's side took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series with this victory after Wednesday's opener in Durham was abandoned due to rain.

Having opted to bat first, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's historic debut, becoming the youngest international for India, came to an early end when Will Jacks had the 15-year-old stumped for 14.

Fellow opener Abhishek Sharma impressed, smashing 43 off 24 deliveries, alongside Ishan Kishan's 40-ball 49 before the pair were dismissed by Sam Curran, who also removed Shivam Dube for five.

A hard-hitting 37 from just 22 balls from captain Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma's quick-fire 24 not out helped India to a respectable 190-7 from their 20-over allocation.

England's response got off to a terrible start as Arshdeep Singh dismissed Phil Salt for a first-ball duck and removed Jos Buttler without scoring in the first over.

But Brook's sublime 39 off only 15 deliveries put India on the back foot, before the England captain was caught behind off Axar Patel, with India successfully reviewing to overturn the on-field decision.

Although Jacks fell for nine, Tom Banton's 39 kept the hosts in the contest alongside Bethell, who then took a liking to Ravi Bishnoi in the 17th over, smashing 29 runs with three maximums included.

Bethell stepped to one side as Jofra Archer's 10 not out steered England over the line with an over to spare.

No dream debut for Sooryavanshi

Surpassing the great Sachin Tendulkar as the youngest player in India history, Sooryavanshi – aged just 15 years and 99 days – will have wanted to make his mark in Manchester.

The teenager smashed a record-breaking 72 sixes in this year's Indian Premier League, topping the scoring charts with 776 runs at an average of 48.5 and striking at a remarkable 237.5.

Sooryavanshi started strong here with two sixes, off Archer and Josh Tongue, but he failed to truly impose himself before being stumped by Buttler when dancing down to Jacks.

For England, there was another narrative at play as Curran claimed 3-33 amid growing speculation that the England all-rounder could take Brook's limited-overs captaincy role, allowing the latter to lead the Test side.

Regardless of who steps up, England have won back-to-back home T20Is against India for the first time since September 2014, largely thanks to Bethell.

His match-winning knock off only 46 balls included five fours and as many sixes, condemning India to a third straight T20I defeat – their worst run in the format since losing four straight games in 2021.
