Cameron Young said he felt like he made "a billion feet of putts" after his blistering opening-round display at the Cadillac Championship put him at the top of the leaderboard.

Young shot an eight-under-par 64 as the PGA Tour returned to the Blue Monster Course at Trump National Doral in Miami for the first time since 2016 on Thursday.

The recently crowned Players Championship winner leads the way by one shot over fellow compatriots Jordan Spieth and Alex Smalley, with Nick Taylor a stroke back in fourth.

Colombia's Nico Echavarria is alone in fifth on five under, with American trio Andrew Putnam, Brian Harman and Gary Woodland all in the running after their respective starts.

But the day belonged to Young, whose combined 97 feet of putts made was the fifth-highest total of the round, while he ranked second for the day in overall putting statistics.

He made eight birdies without dropping a shot, and he acknowledged that his display on the greens must be maintained if he has a chance of victory this weekend.

"I feel like I made a billion feet of putts, which I think works in most places," Young said.

"It's just one of those days that each mistake I made I was not penalised as much as I could have been. And every time my ball got near the hole it seemed to want to go in today.

"I think you can be pretty aggressive into a lot of the greens. They're not particularly firm. I feel like the ball's sitting when you need it to.

"So, it's more just about avoiding some of the big mistakes. There's a couple spots where the rough's a little longer, and obviously, there's tons of water out there."

World number one Scottie Scheffler is seven shots back of Young after carding a one-under 71 despite registering bogeys at the 10th and 11th holes.

Scheffler had opened with three birdies in the first five holes, but he was unable to produce another, with perhaps a highlight of the rest of his round seeing him save par on 14 after he sprayed a driver way right and had the club come out of his hands.

It's the sixth time in his last eight starts that Scheffler has been no better than 20th after an opening round.

"I just wasn't capitalising on a lot of stuff today," Scheffler conceded. "Felt like I could have holed a few more putts.

"Couple more fairways. Felt like when I got a touch off I wasn't able to get it back and didn't really steal any shots today.

"I would have liked to have been a little sharper today. Got off to a good start, but I kind of struggled from then on. Just overall, I hope to be a little sharper tomorrow."

Spieth also came out the gate strong with three birdies and an eagle on the front nine, but mixed four birdies with two bogeys on his way back in.

The 65 was his lowest round of the year, and he's in position to make a run at his first trophy since the 2022 RBC Heritage.
