Wimbledon: Andreeva cruises past Navarro into last eight
Mirra Andreeva reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after a statement win over Emma Navarro.
Andreeva won 6-2 6-3 in an hour and 17 minutes at SW19 to qualify for the last eight at the grand slam for the first time.
The 18-year-old raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set after breaking Navarro’s serve in two of her first three service games.
Navarro threatened a comeback towards the end of the first, but Andreeva responded with three aces to win the set.
Andreeva was not as clinical in the second, losing her serve twice, but managed to still break Navarro four times in order to secure victory.
She will face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the next round after she beat Ekaterina Alexandrova.
It was a tight match that saw Bencic fail to convert five match points before eventually sealing her 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win.
Liudmila Samsonova also booked her spot in the last eight with a 7-5 7-5 win over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
An eventful first set saw seven break points converted before Samsonova just needed the one break in the second.
Data Debrief: Age is just a number for Andreeva
Despite just being 18 years old, Andreeva is not fazed by the bright lights of Wimbledon.
She is the youngest quarter-finalist at the competition since Maria Sharapova at the exact same age in 2005 (18 years and 62 days at the start of the tournament), and the first teenager to do so since Victoria Azarenka and Sabine Lisicki in 2009.
Only Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff (both seven) have beaten more WTA top 10 players this year than Andreeva (six).
