Jack Draper has been knocked out of the Canadian Open in the first round by Terence Atmane.

In his first match since the end of June, and just his fifth since April, Draper lost 6-3 2-6 6-2 to Atmane after an hour and 52 minutes in Montreal.

Draper squandered any early chance to take the lead, failing to convert two break points in the third game of the first set, and he would rue the missed opportunity as Atmane broke ahead in the eighth game before serving out the set.

The Briton responded well, however, racing into a 3-0 lead in the second before another converted break point in the eighth game forced a decider.

But Atmane broke Draper's serve in the very first game of the third set, and did so again in the fifth before clinching victory with his second match point.

The Frenchman will face Karen Khachanov in the next round.

Positives in defeat for Draper

While Draper would have hoped for victory on his return, especially after missing his home slam at Wimbledon, there were still reasons for optimism ahead of this month's US Open.

The 24-year-old managed to win 64% of his second-serve points (21/33), more than his opponents' 49%, and created nine break point opportunities, though only managed to convert two.

Draper looked to have avoided any injuries in Montreal, though did find himself wiping away tears while 4-1 down in the third set.

He has a wildcard entry to next week's Cincinnati Open, where he will look to gain some momentum before the final grand slam of the year.
