Alexander Zverev squandered a one-set lead in his Shanghai Masters semi-final defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Saturday.

The top seed lost 7-5 4-6 3-6 in two hours and four minutes after an impressive comeback from the Spaniard.

Davidovich Fokina saved a break point in the opening game of the match, but could do nothing to prevent Zverev from breaking ahead in game 11 and then winning the first set.

However, momentum shifted in the second as Davidovich Fokina improved on serve, giving away no break points before converting one of his own in game 10 to force a decider.

And the underdog did not look back, racing into a 3-0 lead in the third before securing victory with his fourth match point, but his first on serve.

There was another upset in the second semi-final as Rafael Jodar dispatched fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

The 20-year-old won 6-3 6-4 to tee up an all-Spanish final on Sunday.

Jodar announcing himself on the big stage

Zverev and Medvedev would have been hoping to reach the showpiece, as they both did in 2019 when the Russian won the competition, but it will be an all-Spanish affair instead.

Davidovich Fokina has equalled his best result in an ATP-1000 event by reaching the final, as he did so in Monte Carlo in 2022.

Jodar, meanwhile, is the first player born in 2006 to reach an ATP-1000 final.

Since the format's introduction in 1990, only three players have played fewer main draw matches than Jodar (26) to claim 20 wins at such events – Stefan Edberg (22), Boris Becker and Thomas Muster (25).

No matter the result on Sunday, Jodar is proving to be a threat in his maiden season on the Tour, and he is in a good position to qualify for the ATP Finals.
