Elina Svitolina booked her place in the third round of the Canadian Open with a brilliant comeback victory over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Despite finding herself a set and a break down, Svitolina recovered to win 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 after two hours and 49 minutes in Toronto.

It was a nervy start from both players as neither could hold serve across the first three service games, and it set the tone for the first set, which saw a total of 14 break points, eight of which were converted (four each).

Bouzas Maneiro got the better of Svitolina in the tie-break, and an early break in the second saw her take a 3-1 lead.

The Ukrainian fought back, however, breaking back immediately before winning the tie-break to force a decider.

And although Svitolina took a 5-0 lead in the third set, Bouzas Maneiro brought it back to 5-4 before losing her service game in the 10th.

Svitolina was joined in the third round by compatriot Marta Kostyuk, who won 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 against Canada's Katherine Sebov.

French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska fell to a 7-5 6-1 defeat to Talia Gibson, while Madison Keys cruised to a 6-1 6-2 win over Antonia Ruzic.

Svitolina overcomes poor serve in narrow win

Although Svitolina managed to get over the line in the end, she will no doubt want to improve her serve before her third-round clash with Anastasia Potapova.

Svitolina won just 58% of her first-serve points and 44% of her second-serve points while also committing 11 double faults, though Bouzas Maneiro committed 15 such errors.

Overall, Svitolina converted nine of her 12 break point opportunities, while her counterpart capitalised on eight of her 14 such points.

Meanwhile, only Mirra Andreeva (eight) has claimed more sets with a 6-0 scoreline in 2026 at WTA-level than Kostyuk (seven).

Chwalinska, on the other hand, has yet to win a match since her French Open semi-final victory over Diana Shnaider, losing three matches since.
