Iga Swiatek kickstarted her Canadian Open campaign with a dominant 6-0 6-3 success against Sara Bejlek on Tuesday.

It looked as though Swiatek might seal victory within an hour when she produced a ruthless first-set bagel, which only took 28 minutes.

But Bejlek showed far more resistance in the second set, conjuring up a break after going 3-0 down and, remarkably, passing up nine opportunities to clinch another in Swiatek's very next service game.

At 21 minutes, that game lasted almost as long as the entire opening set, but when Bejlek's forehand flew long at the end of a baseline exchange, the momentum flipped Swiatek's way again.

The six-time major champion produced a love hold and another break to seal the deal, and she will now take on Donna Vekic or Viktorija Golubic in the round of 32.

Another Swiatek bagel sets the tone

The fifth game of set two will live long in the memory of those present in Toronto for this match. 

Swiatek saved nine break points in that game, meaning that despite the convincing nature of her win, she only carved out one more break point than Bejlek overall (12 to 11).

But the tone was set by Swiatek's first-set bagel – the 40th she has handed out at WTA 1000-level events overall. Since the format's introduction in 1990, only Martina Hingis (52) and Serena Williams (50) have won more sets without dropping a game.

Swiatek's win rate at WTA 1000 tournaments now stands at 79.8%, having won 139 matches in the format and only lost 35. Only Williams (80.4%) has a better such win ratio.

The former world number one also maintained her record of never losing consecutive matches to left-handed opponents in WTA main draws, having lost her most recent such contest against Alexandra Eala at Wimbledon.
