Arthur Fils claimed the biggest title of his career so far as he came out on top in an enthralling Cincinnati Open final, defeating Frances Tiafoe across three sets.

The 22-year-old withstood a mid-match surge from Tiafoe and produced a dominant third set on his way to a 6-3 1-6 6-0 triumph in one hour and 28 minutes.

Fils began the final strongly and attacked Tiafoe's serve, breaking his American opponent in the second game of the first set as he quickly established a commanding 3-0 lead.

And though Tiafoe eventually found his way into the match, the damage had already been done by Fils, who wrapped up the set with a love service game to move ahead.

However, Tiafoe needed just 25 minutes to force a decider. He put together back-to-back three-game winning streaks to ensure the encounter would go the distance.

But an error-strewn start to the decider by Tiafoe put Fils in control.

Across his first two service games, Tiafoe served up two double faults as his attempts grew desperate.

And it proved too big of a mountain to climb for Tiafoe as Fils cruised to the finish line despite missing two match points. On his third attempt, a long forehand from Tiafoe sealed the win for the Frenchman.

Fantastic Fils scales new heights

Having become the third-youngest French player to reach the finals of an ATP Masters 1000 since the format's introduction in 1990, Fils put on an impressive display to claim his maiden title in the format in Cincinnati since Borna Coric in 2022.

And in doing so, he became the youngest Frenchman to claim a Masters 1000 title, while becoming the second to claim a title at the Cincinnati Open in the Open Era, after Guy Forget in 1991.

Fils is also the second player, after Jakub Mensik, to claim an ATP Masters 1000 crown among players born since 2004.

He claimed his 20th ATP Masters 1000 match win of 2026, surpassing Gael Monfils (19 in 2016) for the most wins in a season by a French player in the format's history.

Fils is also the third player to claim 20+ wins in such matches this year, after Jannik Sinner (29) and Alexander Zverev (20), and he will now be hoping to translate that form into the season's final grand slam, when the US Open gets started later this month.
