Poland recovered from Iga Swiatek's loss to Belinda Bencic to defeat Switzerland 2-1 in the final of the United Cup.

Swiatek's 3-6 6-0 6-3 loss to Bencic marked a poor start to the day for Poland, who were in the hunt for their maiden United Cup title in Sydney.

Yet Hubert Hurkacz, who is making his return from a knee injury, battled to a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory over Stan Wawrinka to force a deciding doubles encounter.

Neither Hurkacz nor Swiatek featured in the decider, with Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski tasked with facing Bencic and Jakub Paul.

But the Polish duo got the job done with the minimum of fuss, prevailing 6-4 6-3.

It marks a long-awaited victory for Poland, who had managed successive runner-up finishes twice previously.

Data Debrief: Bencic stays perfect

Switzerland may have fallen short, but it was not for the efforts of Bencic, who enjoyed a fantastic tournament and registered a perfect five out of five wins in her single matches.

Bencic's victory also denied Swiatek a pristine record. The WTA world number two was gunning to win her 10th match of the tournament.
