Tottenham's relegation decider bigger than last season's Europa League final, claims De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi believes Tottenham's clash with Everton on Sunday is bigger than last season's Europa League final.

Spurs lost to Chelsea on Tuesday, meaning they go into the final game of the season still needing a victory to be absolutely certain of their Premier League status.

Realistically, a draw against Everton will be enough, with Spurs holding a far superior goal difference compared to West Ham, who are two points back in 18th.

Spurs are backed to stay up by the Opta supercomputer, which hands them an 86.7% chance of avoiding the drop.

And even though Spurs were on the brink of winning a European trophy this time 12 months ago, De Zerbi feels their upcoming contest against the Toffees means much more.

"Sunday is the final for Tottenham, not in Bilbao against Man United [last season], but this is the most important game," De Zerbi said.

"We play for something more important than the trophy – the pride, the history of the club, the dignity are more important than the trophy. The trophy you can win, but the most important thing is to keep the dignity, to keep the pride.

"I have lived the last 45 days just for one thing. Every one of the players, their focus is on the target [of survival] – they are working harder during the week and every one of us want to achieve that goal."

Spurs have not won a home Premier League game since December 6, when Thomas Frank oversaw a 2-0 win over his former club Brentford.

That is one of just two home wins they have managed in the top tier this season, the joint-worst record in the division, along with already-relegated Burnley.

Spurs have taken just 12 points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2025-26, but De Zerbi has asked for one last effort from the home fans.

"They have been fantastic, fantastic and we have to say thanks," he said.

"My focus is on the best 11 I can get and to prepare them in the best way. It's a big day for us."
