Top seed Shelton stunned by Tirante in Houston quarter-finals
Ben Shelton's hopes of a second Clay Court Championships title were dashed after he fell to a shock defeat against Thiago Agustin Tirante in the quarter-finals.
Shelton, who beat Frances Tiafoe in the 2024 edition of the tournament, was on the wrong end of a three-set thriller as Tirante earned a 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 victory.
An hour-long opening set saw Shelton pushed the distance, but the top seed was able to get the better of Tirante in the tie-break, though the Argentine responded emphatically.
Tirante raced in front after breaking Shelton's serve early on, and after being forced to save a break point of his own in the seventh game, he held on to force a deciding set.
Shelton had taken a medical timeout in the second but powered on. However, he was powerless to stop Tirante from progressing to the final four, with the world number 71 sealing the win with a serve that his opponent returned into the net.
"Very happy with this win, my second Top-10 win, so I am very happy with the work that we are doing with my team," Tirante said.
"I knew that Ben was a very difficult player, a great player, so I had to take more risk at some times of the match.
“I did. I sometimes did good, I sometimes did bad, but that was the key. [I had to be] mentally strong all the time and try to break the serve. I did the best possible [job]."

An Argentine is now guaranteed to make their first ATP Tour final, because earlier in the day Roman Andres Burruchaga ousted third seed Learner Tien 7-5, 6-4.
But home hope Tommy Paul ensured there was some American representation in the semi-finals in Houston after he beat sixth seed Tomas Etcheverry in straight sets.
Paul emerged a 6-4 6-2 victor to tee up a clash with compatriot Tiafoe, with the latter having reached the showpiece match of the tournament over the last three years.
Data Debrief: Tirante stays perfect against top-10 opponents
Tirante lost just three games in his opening match of the week against Colton Smith and dropped only two games in the second round against Mackenzie McDonald, and his confidence was on show against Shelton.
And he continued his impressive record against opponents inside the top 10 of the ATP rankings. He has won both his matches when facing such players, with this following a triumph over Andrey Rublev en route to the Bastad semi-finals in 2024.
