Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Yibing Wu in straight sets to reach the last 16 at the US Open.

The second seed won 6-3 6-4 6-1 in two hours and 21 minutes as he continues to go from strength to strength upon his return from injury.

Alcaraz made a fast start as he broke Wu's serve in the first game of the match, though the latter got the set back on serve in the sixth game.

Nevertheless, Alcaraz secured back-to-back breaks to win the first, doing so with his second set point.

The pair exchanged breaks early on in the second, but Alcaraz made a crucial breakthrough in the 10th game to give Wu a mountain to climb at Flushing Meadows.

And the third was comfortable enough for Alcaraz, who secured breaks in the fourth and sixth games before clinching victory from his third match point.

Alcaraz will face Tommy Paul in the round of 16 after the home favourite edged out Alexander Bublik 6-4 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-3 in three hours and 15 minutes.

Seventh seed Daniil Medvedev also secured his place in the next round with a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over Arthur Rinderknech.

Alcaraz continues to thrive in the States

Defending champion Alcaraz has made a strong start at the US Open, showing few signs of weakness since returning from his wrist injury.

Alcaraz now has a win rate of 90% at the US Open; he is one of the two active players to have a win rate of 90% or above at a single grand slam event, along with Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open (90.4%, minimum 20 matches).

The Spaniard is also the fifth player this century to claim 17 consecutive grand slam match wins, after Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Jannik Sinner.

Medvedev, meanwhile, has reached a grand slam round of 16 without conceding a set en route for the first time since the US Open in 2022, when he was the world number one.
