Daniil Medvedev will face Arthur Rinderknech in the third round of the US Open after he brushed aside home hopeful Sebastian Gorzny in straight sets on Wednesday. 

Medvedev needed just over two hours to defeat wild card Gornzy 6-3 6-1 7-5, as he aims to try and add to the major title he claimed at Flushing Meadows five years ago. 

Gornzy proved no match for Medvedev in the first set, with the seventh seed reeling off the final four games to take the early lead after just 21 minutes of action. 

Medvedev's dominance continued in the second, breaking his opponent in the fourth game, though he was left frustrated midway through the set after a bizarre interruption. 

A pair of birds appeared on the net during a rally midway through the second set, prompting the umpire to replay the point, but Medvedev remained composed to go two sets up. 

Gorzny attempted to restore some pride in the third set, trading blows with Medvedev but failing to get the better of his opponent, while only managing to muster one break point.

Medvedev won the final three games to confirm his triumph, sealing his spot in the next round at the second attempt, but there was no such luck for Spaniard Rafael Jodar.

Jodar, who arrived in New York as the 12th seed, was stunned by lucky loser Yunchaokete Bu, who produced a sensational display to win 6-2 6-1 6-1 and reach the next round. 

Ben Shelton was also put through his paces by Hubert Hurkacz, but he was able to come out on top with a 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 triumph. 

In the last 30 years, Shelton is the only left-handed American player to reach the last 32 at the US Open in four consecutive years.

Denis Shapovalov or Luca Van Assche are up next for Shelton, who reached the semi-finals at this major three years ago. 

Medvedev marches on in New York

Since his main draw debut in 2018, Medvedev has thrived at the US Open. His 35 career match wins at the tournament are the most of any player at the event. 

And he once again proved how dangerous he can be on this surface. Since the start of the 2020 season, Medvedev (243) has claimed the most ATP-level match wins of any player on hard courts, while this was the first time he claimed back-to-back wins at a major since the US Open in 2024. 

Medvedev has also now won his past eight main draw matches against opponents at their home grand slam event, with seven of those wins coming in straight sets – in that span, he only conceded a set to Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open in 2022.

He has reached the third round for the eighth time at the US Open, surpassing the Australian Open (seven) for his outright-most at a single major event, and he will be hoping to maintain his positive momentum heading into his clash with Rinderknech.
