Iga Swiatek booked her place in the third round of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Nadia Podoroska.

The eighth seed won 6-3 6-2 in an hour and 11 minutes to set up a third-round tie with Marie Bouzkova, who defeated Harriet Dart on Thursday.

Swiatek made the first breakthrough in the fourth game of the match, but had to hold her nerve in order to see out the first set.

Despite giving away just one point across her first four service games, Swiatek had to save four break points while serving for the set, which she eventually did.

Swiatek made even lighter work of the second, converting two of a possible three break points before sealing victory with her first match point.

Naomi Osaka, meanwhile, needed three sets to defeat Katerina Siniakova, with the 28-year-old prevailing 6-2 5-7 6-1 in just over two hours.

Good omen for Swiatek?

This was just the second meeting between Swiatek and Podoroska, with the Pole previously winning in straight sets en route to a maiden grand slam title at Roland-Garros in 2020.

Swiatek has now made the round of 32 in the last 27 grand slam events (since the Australian Open 2020); in the Open Era, only Martina Navratilova (35 and 30) and Conchita Martinez (30) had longer such streaks in women’s singles majors.

Swiatek has also claimed 26 wins at the US Open, only trailing the French Open (43) for her most wins at a single WTA level event (also 26 at the Australian Open).

Osaka, meanwhile, is the second Japanese player in the Open Era with 80+ women’s singles grand slam main draw wins after Ai Sugiyama (84).
