T20 World Cup: South Africa beat Afghanistan in enthralling clash after second Super Over
South Africa made it two wins from two at the T20 World Cup as Tristan Stubbs and David Miller led the Proteas to victory over Afghanistan in a dramatic double Super Over win.
After both nations finished tied on 187, Afghanistan appeared set to win the first Super Over, but a six from the final ball from Stubbs saw both sides tied at 17 runs apiece.
Miller then starred in the second Super Over to hand Afghanistan a daunting target of 24, a total that seemed unlikely when Mohammad Nabi was caught with the first ball.
But three consecutive sixes from Rahmanullah Gurbaz saw him need five from the final ball after a wide by Keshav Maharaj, but he was caught to seal the most dramatic of wins for South Africa.
Hoping to bounce back from their opening loss to New Zealand, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first, and they made a quick start when Aiden Markram (5) was dismissed inside the first three overs of the Proteas' innings.
However, a second-wicket stand of 114 from Quinton de Kock (59) and Ryan Rickelton (61) steadied the ship for South Africa, who gave Afghanistan a target of 188 for victory.
Lungi Ngidi got the Proteas up and running with the early wickets of Ibrahim Zadran (12) and Gulbadin Naib (0), before Sediqullah Atal's (0) dismissal had Afghanistan reeling.
But Gurbaz top scored with 84 and Afghanistan needed 13 runs from the final over to claim a huge win, though they were nine wickets down.
In the most astonishing conclusion, a six from Noor Ahmad and two Kagiso Rabada no balls had Afghanistan on the brink of victory, with the equation reduced to just two from three balls, but when they pushed for two, Fazalhaq Farooqi (0) was astonishingly run out with the scores level to see the clash go to a Super Over.

Azmatullah Omarzai struck 16 off Ngidi in Afghanistan's first Super Over, only for Stubbs to level the match once again despite seeing Dewald Brevis dismissed by Farooqi in South Africa's reply.
Stubbs and Miller returned to the crease for the second Super Over and pulled South Africa clear, and despite the best efforts of Gurbaz, it proved too big of a mountain to climb for Afghanistan.
Data Debrief: Afghanistan suffer more woe against SA
South Africa and Afghanistan provided all the thrills and spills associated with the T20 World Cup, but it was the latter who fell short at the final hurdle, with Stubbs and Miller's heroics sealing a thrilling conclusion.
The Proteas have now won each of their last four men's T20Is against Afghanistan, with all four of these games coming at the T20 World Cup. It equals their best winning run in the competition against a single opposition, along with their four consecutive wins over Bangladesh and New Zealand.
And although it wasn't meant to be for Gurbaz, his brilliant batting displays took him to 111 for the entire tournament, with only Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan (120) and New Zealand's Tim Seifert (154) having more runs so far.
